Our dwelling reflects the society and culture
surrounding us, as well as the climatic conditions, and
our standard of living; all influences from the outside
world, which are becoming larger and more diverse.
At the same time the dwellers outlook onto the world
is widened, making it increasingly difficult to find a
satisfying answer for the question of how to live. The
history of dwelling is closely related to the development
of furniture, interior design, architecture and
town planning. On both a large and small scale, the
living space of human beings has been measured and
arranged, having a big impact on our way of living.
But what exactly is responsible for a specific “culture
of living” to emerge? And how did these influences
change in the course of time?
To find out how we shall live in the future
seems an urgent task, since the world population is
growing rapidly. But it is not our intention to develop
once and for all a unique future style of living; our aim
is to analyze and emphasize a variety of possibilities.
From a European point of view it is especially interesting
to deal with South East Asia, since the physical and
cultural distance, as well as its rapidly growing population
constitutes a field of activity, posing significant
challenges for exploring the topic of living.
The project “culture of living” will continue
a dialogue with common force, since first contacts
between single institutions – universities participating
in this project are among them – have already been
installed in recent years.

Wie wir wohnen spiegelt das soziale und kulturelle
Umfeld, die klimatischen Umweltbedingungen, und
unseren persönlichen Lebensstandard wieder. Je umfangreicher
und vielfältiger diese Einflüsse von der Außenwelt
auf die Wohnung, und je weiter der Blick des Bewohners
auf die Welt, desto komplexer wird die Frage nach der Art
des Wohnens. Die Geschichte des Wohnens ist zugleich
eine Geschichte des Interieurs, der Architektur und des
Städtebaus, durchgängig in allen Maßstäben ist der
Lebensraum des Menschen abgesteckt und gestaltet
worden, was sich unmittelbar auf seine Lebensweise
ausgewirkt hat. Dabei ist besonders die Frage interessant,
welche Parameter die Herausbildung von spezifischen
„Wohnkulturen“ beeinflussten, und wie sich die Gewichtung
dieser Einflüsse im Laufe der Zeit verändert hat.
In einer Zeit des rasanten Bevölkerungswachstums
ist die Frage nach den neuen zukünftigen Formen des Wohnens
aktueller denn je. Es geht hierbei nicht darum, eine
neue für alle in gleicher Weise gültige Form des Wohnens
zu entwickeln und zu formulieren, sondern die bestehende
Vielfalt herauszuarbeiten. Aus europäischer Sicht bietet
gerade der südostasiatische Raum aufgrund seiner geografischen
und kulturellen Distanz, aber auch wegen seines
rapiden Bevölkerungswachstums und der damit verbundenen
Entstehung einer Vielfalt von unterschiedlichen Wohnformen
ein reichhaltiges Feld für die Auseinandersetzung
mit der Thematik des Wohnens.
Das Projekt „culture of living“ dient dabei als
Fortsetzung eines Dialogprozesses mit gebündelten Kräften,
nachdem zwischen einzelnen Institutionen – auch Universitäten,
die sich an diesem Projekt als Mitorganisatoren
und Partner beteiligen – in vergangenen Jahren bereits
erste Bande geknüpft worden sind.
