This group exhibition of young artists who participated in the trans-urban 2010 project was planned in order to provide more visibility to the excellent photographic work which was created during their two-week-long journey to India. More than anything, there was the need to narrate through the medium of photography those things which touched our hearts and remained in our memories from this distant country, which we had the opportunity to feel and breathe for a short while.
We have therefore created a free path by following a random immersion in the chaotic woven texture of daily life in India, through portrayals of the people and pictures of the vibrant metropolitan and natural panoramic views, through images of temples and small altars that everywhere serve to create places of worship and introspection, through photographs of Indian architecture – an object of study of the daily workshops – and through many small points of examination of the different habits and colourful costumes of the Indian people. Thus, we tried to render in a synaesthetic way the colours and the exhilarating odours which delight the senses everywhere and at every moment, the tastes of the astonishing spices and the constant noise of life.
But above all we tried to transmit with every image the delicate and profound purity of every single person whom we encountered, each individual who narrated to us through their gestures and eyes their evident joy of life. Whether more or less poor, young or old, living in a house or in a hut or in the streets – as entire families live on the cities’ pavement– or simply by staying with others, by being human among other humans. We had the sensation that only this matters. A sense of happiness of having understood and accepted that mankind is about what we are rather than what we have.
The selection of the photographs, which I personally chose as curator, takes into account two aspects of the project: the first being precisely the creation of a heterogeneous and multifaceted space, a little Panopticon of our journey, and the other aspect of absolute relevance being the visual presentation of Indian architecture.
